Watford coach Sanchez Flores to leave

WATFORD manager Quique Sanchez Flores will leave his position at the end of the season, saying yesterday there has been a conflict of views about the club’s achievements in his first year in charge.
Watford was promoted from the second-tier League Championship last season and was one of the favorites to be relegated. The team secured its survival in England’s lucrative top division with ease and reached the semifinals of the FA Cup, losing to Crystal Palace.
In announcing Sanchez Flores’ departure, Watford acknowledged the Spanish coach achieved the target set by the club at the start of the season — staying in the Premier League — without going into details.
“We looked at all the season and after that I confirmed that the club and me, we don’t have the same point of view about the season,” Sanchez Flores, 51, said. “So we don’t have the necessary conditions to activate the clause to renew the contract.”
His contract is due to expire at the end of June.
Watford’s last game of the season is at home against Sunderland tomorrow.
Sanchez Flores, a former Valencia coach, is the first manager to keep Watford in the Premier League after each of the club’s previous appearances in the top flight ended in an instant return to the Championship.
Watford was eighth in the standings in February, four points behind sixth-place Southampton. The team has won only two of its last 11 league games. Watford is in 13th place, and could finish as high as 12th or as low as 16th.
“I felt completely happy with this year,” Sanchez Flores said, “and I have enjoyed this experience.”
