Wenger inks deal to extend Arsenal stay
ARSENE Wenger is likely to finish his coaching career at Arsenal after signing a new three-year contract extension that commits him to the north London club until he is 64.
The deal announced yesterday will extend Wenger's stay at the English Premier League club to almost 18 years.
The 60-year-old Wenger, who is contracted to the Gunners until June 2014, said last week that his next contract would be his last and that he did not want to coach past the age of 65.
"My heart belongs to Arsenal and my desire is to see this team win silverware," Wenger said. "My commitment and drive are as strong and fresh as ever. Signing a new deal means that I can see this talented group of players reach their potential.
"Trust me, they are ready to deliver."
Arsenal has won three Premier League and four FA Cup titles under Wenger, including the double in 1998 and 2002, but is without a trophy of any description since the 2005 FA Cup.
The Gunners were known for grinding out results with dour performances before the Frenchman arrived in September 1996. Wenger immediately rejuvenated the lineup to overhaul the club's image and style.
Arsenal's reputation as the best team to watch in the Premier League is now firmly entrenched and Wenger has regularly been linked with moves elsewhere, particularly to Real Madrid.
"We are thrilled that Arsene has signed an extension to his contract," Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood said. "He has masterfully transformed this football club over the last 14 years and the exciting and compelling football we play under his stewardship is admired the world over.
"Arsene is a very talented man and we believe the young, exciting team he has nurtured over the past five years will reward his and the fans' patience with silverware."
