Werder beats Inter Milan 3-0 in Champions League
WERDER Bremen beat a second-string Inter Milan 3-0 yesterday to deny the Champions League holder first place in Group A.
Sebastian Proedl scored in the first half and Marko Arnautovic and Claudio Pizarro added goals after the break for Bremen's only victory of the campaign in its final group match.
Inter had already qualified for the round of 16 but finished second in the group to Champions League newcomer Tottenham. Bremen finished bottom of the group, behind FC Twente.
"I know it was hard for them to get motivated but I guess they don't like losing," Werder captain Torsten Frings said. "We wanted to have a good farewell before our fans."
Inter rested many stars ahead of the Club World Cup and Werder, which is struggling in the Bundesliga, easily controlled the match.
Werder forward Hugo Almeida's volley was tipped over by goalkeeper Paolo Orlandoni in the 31st. But the 'keeper was helpless in the 39th as Proedl rose to meet a corner from Torsten Frings and send a powerful header that was deflected off Ivan Cordoba.
Inter's first chance came on the stroke of halftime, but Goran Pandev's header went high.
Werder doubled its lead four minutes into the second half, when Arnautovic beat Esteban Cambiasso to the ball and connected with a cross from Almeida to volley home.
Pandev then forced Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese into his first meaningful save, before Aaron Hunt shook the crossbar of Inter's goal.
Pizarro, who came on for Almeida in the 76th, completed the rout in the 88th, shaking off Cambiasso and slotting home from the edge of the penalty box into Orlandoni's low right corner.
Pandev nearly scored in injury time but hit the post.
