Wigan buries Arsenal hopes with late flurry

ARSENAL'S faint hopes of winning the English Premier League title, rekindled after Chelsea lost on Saturday, were finally killed off when it conceded three late goals to lose 2-3 at Wigan Athletic yesterday.

The Gunners, with goals from Theo Walcott and Mikael Silvestre, were coasting towards a 2-0 victory with 10 minutes left but crashed to a stunning defeat as goals from Ben Watson, Titus Bramble and Charles N'Zogbia gave Wigan its first league victory over Arsene Wenger's side.

The result moved Wigan on to 35 points, seven clear of Hull City, and virtually guaranteed its Premier League survival for another season.

Arsenal, which would have moved to within three points of leader Chelsea with a win, remained third on 71 points, six behind Chelsea and five behind Manchester United with just three matches to play.

On Saturday, a fast and fluid Tottenham Hotspur floored Chelsea 2-1 in a lively London derby that dealt a massive boost to United's hopes of retaining the title.

United, which started the day four points adrift of Chelsea, ended it just a point behind with everything to play for after beating Manchester City 1-0 with a last-gasp goal from veteran midfielder Paul Scholes.

Chelsea was reduced to 10 men after captain John Terry was sent off in the 66th minute.

Jermain Defoe opened the scoring for Spurs at White Hart Lane with a 15th-minute penalty after a handball by Terry. Gareth Bale hammered in Tottenham's second goal just before halftime with a low shot past goalie Petr Cech at the near post that left the visitors reeling.

As the clock ticked towards 90 minutes, 10-man Chelsea was lucky not to have conceded more goals as Spurs fans began to celebrate - only for the chants of 'Ole' to stick in their throats when Frank Lampard pulled a goal back in stoppage time.

"We well deserved the win tonight, there's no doubt about that," Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp told ESPN television. "I thought we were even better today than we were against Arsenal."

Fighting for the final Champions League qualifying slot after beating north London rival Arsenal 2-1 on Wednesday, Tottenham's victory moved it into the coveted fourth place on 64 points and ahead of City (62).
