Wigan skipper Caldwell hoping for FA Cup boost
WIGAN Athletic captain Gary Caldwell believes victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final would give his side the impetus to avoid relegation from the English Premier League.
A 2-3 defeat by Swansea City in its last league match has left Wigan three points adrift of safety with a testing away trip to Arsenal and a home fixture against Aston Villa to come.
But before that, Roberto Martinez's side plays in the showpiece final at Wembley on Saturday, and Caldwell thinks that if the club can pull off an upset and beat City, it would lead to a massive upturn in morale.
"The Premier League and FA Cup are two different things," Caldwell said yesterday. "But winning the FA Cup would give us the confidence and belief that anything would be possible in the last two games. It is a bit bizarre that the last two league games are more important than the FA Cup final, and no-one would deny that."
Defensive errors against Swansea were costly for Wigan, with Caldwell one of those who were culpable in Tuesday's loss at the DW Stadium.
And the 31-year-old concedes there needs to be a massive improvement in that area if Wigan is to have any chance against a City side packed with world-class talent. "We have to be on our guard because we know the threat they have going forward with players like Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez," he said.
