Wins for Shenhua, East Asia

Shanghai teams Shenhua and East Asia picked up key victories in the 21st round of the Chinese Super League yesterday.

Colombian midfielder Giovanni Moreno scored the sole goal of the match against Qingdao Jonoon to hand Shenhua its first victory after four matches.

Former Shenhua and Beijing Guo’an player Joel Griffiths was in Qingdao’s lineup but the Australian was forced out after being hit on the thigh by Moreno as he was attempting a shot at the goal in the first half.

Both sides were denied by the woodwork but the deadlock was broken in the 66th minute when an unmarked Moreno found the net for hosts Shenhua with a header from Firas al-Khatib’s corner pass.

Shenhua could have consolidated the lead but Jiang Kun wasted a one-on-one chance against Qingdao keeper Liu Zhengli. Jiang attempted to dribble past Liu only to lose the ball to the keeper.

In another match, striker Wu Lei grabbed a hat-trick as Shanghai East Asia notched an impressive 3-2 victory over Tianjin Teda.

Though Tianjin equalized twice in each half, Wu’s deciding goal in the 78th helped East Asia to move up to 7th in the 16-team CSL standing with 26 points. The Shanghai teams will be up against each other for a derby clash at the Shanghai Stadium next Saturday.

Elsewhere in CSL, Guangzhou Evergrande beat Changchun Yatai 2-1 in an away game. Guangzhou tops the standing with 57 points, 14 more than second placed Shandong Luneng, which also beat Liaoning Whowin 2-1 yesterday.

The other Shanghai team Shenxin will take on Hangzhou Greentown today.
