Wolves leave woeful Hammers in deep trouble
WOLVERHAMPTON Wanderers won 3-1 at West Ham on Tuesday to leave its English Premier League rival deep in relegation trouble.
Kevin Doyle put the visitors ahead in the 28th minute before Ronald Zubar and Matthew Jarvis added second-half goals to complete West Ham's worst home defeat to Wolves since 1962.
Wolves' biggest win of the season took their unbeaten streak to three matches and lifted them one place to 15th - four points ahead of West Ham with seven games to play.
The 17th-placed Hammers, who beat Wolves 2-0 on the opening day of the season back in August, have 28 points and are hovering just three above the three-team relegation zone.
The match against Wolves looked like being arguably the easiest of West Ham's last five home matches but Doyle scored following a mistake by Hammers defender James Tomkins.
Tomkins tried to pass back to goalkeeper Robert Green but got the ball trapped under his feet and mis-hit it into space, where the Ireland striker collected it and scored with a shot that went in off the far post.
Zubar made it 2-0 in the 58th with a diagonal shot past Green into the bottom left corner and Jarvis put Wolves even further in front three minutes later with a 30-meter shot.
Many West Ham fans had left Upton Park by the time Hammers substitute Guillermo Franco scored a late goal in injury time.
Also on Tuesday, Newcastle edged closer to promotion from the second-tier League Championship with a 1-0 win at Doncaster.
The Magpies are top and five points clear of second-place West Bromwich Albion with eight games remaining. Third-place Nottingham Forest is another five points back and still in with a chance of automatic promotion after a 2-0 win over relegation-threatened Crystal Palace.
