Women team coach to join Evergrande

CHINESE women’s national team coach Hao Wei has quit his post and is joining Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande for “better personal development”.

He will become assistant coach to Brazilian World Cup winning manager Luiz Felipe Scolari and the head coach of the club’s reserve team.

The Chinese Football Association confirmed on its website yesterday that it had accepted Hao’s resignation.

“Since becoming head coach of the women’s national team in January 2012, Hao Wei has been devoted to his work, the team’s management and training even in their down times. The team has made improvements in technique and tactics, winning bronze at the 2014 Asian Cup and advancing to the 2015 World Cup last eight.

“We had a sincere communication with Hao Wei about his resignation. We respect Hao’s wish for ‘further personal development’,” the CFA statement read.

The CFA said it has started the process of seeking a replacement for Hao to prepare the team for the Olympic qualifiers next February.

Evergrande confirmed to sina.com yesterday that Hao will join the coaching team of the defending CSL champion.

Hao won much admiration for helping the Chinese women advance to the 2015 World Cup finals after a gap of eight years. They managed to reach the quarterfinals where they lost 0-1 to eventual champion the US. Hao then expressed his wish to leave his position.

CFA confirmed accepting his resignation only after China completed its East Asian Cup itinerary in Wuhan, Hubei Province, earlier this month, during which Hao was still in charge of the team — it lost all three matches; to South Korea, North Korea and Japan.

The Chinese women reached their pinnacle in the late 1990s, winning the 1996 Olympic silver medal and sealing a runner-up finish at the 1999 World Cup. They lost to the US in both finals. The team then went through a dark phase, changing head coaches 11 times in the past 14 years.
