Wu fires brace as SIPG stays top

SHANGHAI SIPG retained its lead atop the Chinese Super League standings following a 4-2 victory away to Chongqing Lifan last night, with midfielder Wu Lei firing a brace.

The visitors took the lead in just the 10th minute when Wu scored his first goal on an assist by Dario Conca. The Argentine padded the lead through a direct freekick from outside the box in the 23rd. It was Conca’s eighth league goal for SIPG.

Asamoah Gyan wasted a great one-on-one chance against Chongqing goalie Sui Weijie one minute later by firing the ball over the bar onto the stands. The Ghana striker didn’t let go another chance in the box, however, when he was left unmarked in the 39th, scoring his second goal since joining the club on an assist by Wu. SIPG went into the break 3-0 ahead.

Chongqing won a penalty in the 56th after midfielder Peng Xinli was pushed to the ground in the box. Emanuel Gigliotti found the net from the spot.

Conca provided another assist for Wu in the 79th before Gigliotti also sealed his own brace, pulling one back five minutes before the final whistle, for the final score 4-2.

SIPG was missing captain Sun Xiang, Tobias Hysen, and Davi due to injuries. The victory gave the Shanghai team, on 45 points, a one-point advantage over defending CSL champion Guangzhou Evergrande which beat Hangzhou Greentown 1-0 in another Sunday match.

Shandong Luneng overcame Tianjin Teda 3-1 on Saturday to place third on 43 points.

Beijing Guo’an was the only side among the CSL’s “big four” to fail to collect all three points in the 21st round, losing 1-2 at Guizhou Renhe. The team from the capital lies fourth on 40 points, holding an 11-point advantage over fifth-ranked Jiangsu Sainty.

Shanghai Greenland Shenhua, seventh in the standings, takes on Henan Jianye at Hongkou Football Stadium tonight. The CSL will then go into a two-week recess before resuming for the remaining nine rounds.
