Zhou triumphs for China’s 3rd gold in Sochi

China’s Zhou Yang defended her Olympic 1,500m short track title yesterday while Victor Ahn gave Russia victory in the men’s 1,000m.

The 22-year-old Zhou, who was only third in the World Cup rankings this season, came good when it mattered most, racing to victory in 2 minutes, 19.140 seconds.

South Korean 17-year-old Shim Suk-Hee, who was second at last year’s world championships, took silver in 2:19.239 with Italy’s Arianna Fontana claiming bronze in 2:19.416.

“I was nervous at the beginning, but after I finished it I felt so thrilled,” said Zhou, who gave China its third gold of the Sochi Games. “I’ve been through a lot during the past four years,” she added. “I didn’t expect I could come back to the Olympic Games. I just wanted to do my best during training and competition.”

Ahn won his fourth Olympic gold medal in short track when he stormed to victory in the men’s 1,000m. The 28-year-old, who won three golds for his native South Korea at the 2006 Turin Olympics before switching nationality, won in a time of 1 minute, 25.325 seconds.

Fellow Russian Vladimir Grigorev won silver in 1:25.399 while Sjinkie Knegt of the Netherlands finished in third place in a time of 1:25.611.

Ahn’s gold followed a bronze in the 1,500m. Canada’s Charles Hamelin, who had won the 1,500m, fell in the quarterfinals while South Korea’s 2013 world champion Sin Da-Woon was disqualified from the final.

In men’s curling, China and Sweden claimed easy wins to move into a tie for first place and guarantee at least a tiebreaker for a spot in the semifinals.

Canada beat Britain 7-5 in a tense game that went down to the final rock, leaving both teams at 5-2.

China silenced the home crowd early in a 9-6 win over Russia and Sweden needed just nine ends to beat Germany 8-4. Both winning teams are 6-1.

In men’s speedskating, Zbigniew Brodka of Poland won the 1,500 meters. Koen Verweij of Netherlands claimed silver and Denny Morrison of Canada took bronze.
