Chen, Si ease way into 10m platform final
CHINA looked to add more medals in the diving competition of the World Swimming Championships as Chen Roulin and Si Yajie finished first and third, respectively, in the 10-meter platform semifinals yesterday in Barcelona, Spain.
Chen, the two-time defending Olympic champion on the tower, topped the list of 18 semifinalists with a total of 373.65 points from five dives. Tonia Couch of Great Britain was second with 368.15 points while Si scored 341.85 points.
The final will be contested today.
Other contenders included Canada's Roseline Filion who finished fourth with 327.45 points and Maria Kurjo of Germany in fifth. Olympic bronze medalist Pandelela Pamg of Malaysia was eighth
Late on Tuesday, Qin Kai and He Chong won gold, outclassing the competition by almost deciding the title halfway through the final when they achieved a tough forward pike with two-and-a-half somersaults and two twists in the men's 3-meter synchronized final.
Qin, diving with He Chong for the first time at a major competition, recorded his fourth consecutive world title in the event.
He Chong added the gold to his two world titles in the 3-meter individual springboard from 2009 and 2011, and his Olympic gold in the individual event from 2008.
Qin and He Chong earned an unassailable 448.86 points, giving China its seventh gold in the men's 3-meter synchronized springboard in eight worlds.
Russia's Evgeny Kuznetsov and Ilia Zakharov repeated their silver medal from 2011 with 428.01 points, and Mexico's Jahir Ocampo and Rommel Pacheco took bronze with 422.79.
Qin said he hopes they win more.
"I'm not really satisfied with today's performance," Qin said. "But on the other hand, it is our first competition, and from this championship we know each other better."
