FINA to retest drug tests from worlds

FINA plans to retest doping samples from last year's world championships in Rome for evidence of blood doping.

After a meeting in Bangkok, swimming's world governing body said it would examine samples to check for the presence of "plasticizers" - tiny particles of plastic left over from blood bags.

In September, FINA said that of the 391 tests taken at the July 15-August 2 Rome championships, none came back positive. A total of 162 samples were screened for the blood-boosting hormone EPO.

FINA also says it will look into the introduction of a "biological passport" program to monitor swimmers' blood profiles for evidence of doping. FINA will also consider storing drug samples for at least eight years after world championships for possible future retests.

Meet record

Meanwhile in Long Beach, Japanese Olympic gold medalist Kosuke Kitajima set a meet record in the 100-meter breaststroke on the last day of the Southern California Grand Prix swim meet on Monday.

Kitajima swam a time of 52.17 seconds to beating American Mike Alexandrov.

Japan's Hidemasa Sano won the 200m individual medley in 1:43.79, holding off Austria's Markus Rogan (1:45.69) and American Robert Margalis (1:47.40).

Former Olympians Matt Grevers and Katie Hoff have won the top overall awards at the meet, which ended with Michael Phelps' gold medal in the 100-yard butterfly.

The grand prix wrapped up with Phelps winning three of his five events. Phelps beat Japan's Masayuki Kishida in 45.68 seconds in the fly. Local swimmer Jessica Hardy set the meet record with 58.99 seconds in the 100m breaststroke, barely beating Rebecca Soni (59.00).

Ariana Kukors later set a meet record in the 200m individual medley, finishing in 1 minute, 55.05 seconds.

Grevers won five gold medals in Long Beach, while Hoff had the women's highest point total.

Chloe Sutton won the women's 1,650m freestyle with a time of 16:10.85, while Zane Grothe won the men's version in 15:11.89. Grevers, a two-time Olympic relay champion, won five gold medals in Long Beach, adding the 100-yard backstroke on Monday with a winning time of 45.97.
