Ishchenko clinches record 18th sync gold
Russia鈥檚 Natalya Ishchenko won a record 18th career synchronized swimming gold medal at the world championships in Kazan, Russia, yesterday with victory in the solo free routine.
Ishchenko鈥檚 program scored 97.2333 points to beat China鈥檚 Huang Xuechen by 1.5333 points.
The bronze went to Ona Carbonell of Spain on 94.9 points.
Ishchenko鈥檚 win moves her one ahead of her longtime duet partner Svetlana Romashina, who has 17 world championship gold medals.
A potential 19th career world gold awaits Ishchenko today when she and Romashina compete in the duet free routine.
Ishchenko took a break after the 2012 Olympics to raise a family but is hoping to add to her three Olympic gold medals next year.
Meanwhile, with one eye on Rio de Janeiro, swimming鈥檚 stars begin the battle on Sunday for world championship medals in Kazan to prove their form heading into the 2016 Olympic Games. The swimming section of the world aquatic championships runs from August 2-9 with hungry pretenders eager to steal some glory from reigning champions.
Chinese hopes
Sun Yang will lead China鈥檚 bid to repeat the five golds it won in Barcelona two years ago.
The Chinese giant will be looking to add the world title to his Olympic gold in the men鈥檚 400m freestyle after a helter-skelter couple of years which also saw him banned for three months for a doping offence.
Stunned by Japan鈥檚 Kosuke Hagino in the 200m at last year鈥檚 Asian Games, the Chinese giant will want to prove his mettle as world champion in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle.
After flopping in Barcelona in 2013 when she failed to take a medal, Ye Shiwen, the Olympic 200m and 400m individual medley champion, has something to prove on the world stage.
As ever, the USA brings a star-studded team to the Tatarstan capital with marquee names including Olympic champions Missy Franklin, Katie Ledecky, Ryan Lochte and Nathan Adrian.
Treble world record-holder Ledecky is the only American to top the 2015 world rankings in her events, with the year鈥檚 best times in the 400m, 800m and 1,500m freestyle.
