Jiao upstages Liu for 200 fly gold

JIAO Liuyang of China led from start to finish to win the women's 200 butterfly at the world championships in Shanghai.

Jiao, the Olympic silver medalist, finished in a time of 2 minutes, 05.55 seconds yesterday while Ellen Gandy of Britain took the silver in a time of 2:05.59.

Olympic champion Liu Zige, in second for all but the final 20 meters of the race, was third in a time of 2:05.90. Liu was the defending champion from Rome in 2009 and the world record holder at 2:01.81.

Also late on Wednesday, China edged Russia 13-12 in overtime and Greece beat Italy 14-11 to advance to the gold medal final of the women's water polo championships.

China and Russia were level at 9-9 at the end of regulation time, but the home side got the win in the first extra period. Olympic gold medalists the Netherlands and two-time defending champions the United States played consolation matches on Wednesday. Heather Petri scored two goals as the US beat Canada 8-4 to advance to the fifth-place final today and will play Australia, which beat the Netherlands 12-7.

Hungary beat Cuba 12-7 on Wednesday for ninth place and Spain defeated New Zealand 15-7 for 11th.
