Le Clos and Hosszu star in Beijing

South Africa’s Chad Le Clos and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu closed in on World Cup victory yesterday, taking three medals apiece as the short-course swimming competition’s final leg kicked off in Beijing.

Le Clos, who famously edged out American star Michael Phelps to win the 200m men’s butterfly gold in last year’s London Olympics, took the top spot yet again in his signature event last night, clocking 1:51.70.

The 21-year-old South African rounded out his first day in Beijing with a silver in the 100m freestyle and bronze in the 100m individual medley.

Hosszu, 24, clinched two golds — one in the women’s 200m freestyle in 1:53.82 and the other in the 200m individual medley, which she won in 2:05.34 — as well as the bronze in the 100m butterfly.

But the Hungarian’s busy schedule — Hosszu is competing in 10 events in Beijing — appeared to take a toll on her later in the day, as she missed the podium with a fourth-place finish in the 200m backstroke.

Le Clos’ and Hosszu’s golds give the World Cup king and queen a clean sweep in this year’s men’s 200m butterfly and women’s 200m medley and put the pair on track to win their second series titles when the competition wraps up today.

Australian swimmers have set four world records this World Cup in the mixed 4x50m medley relay, a new race introduced this year.

No world records were broken in Beijing yesterday.
