Lochte breaks another record
RYAN Lochte set another world record at the short-course world championships in Dubai, with the American adding the 200-meter individual medley mark to his 400 record a day earlier.
Lochte clocked 1 minute, 50.08 seconds on Friday, improving on the previous mark set by South Africa's Darian Townsend by nearly 1.5 seconds.
Lochte finished more than two bodylengths ahead of his closest competitor, Markus Rogan of Austria, who touched 2.82 seconds later. Another American, Tyler Clary, was third, 3.48 behind.
Lochte's two marks represent the only individual world records set in 2010 - either in short- or long-course - after high-tech bodysuits were banned at the beginning of the year. By contrast, nearly every record was broken multiple times the previous two years.
The Chinese women are dominating the relay at this meet, with the foursome of Zhao Jing, Zhao Jin, Liu Zige and Tang Yi just missing out on a world record by 0.32 seconds after finishing in 3:48.29 in a very close final.
Natalie Coughlin, Rebecca Soni, Dana Vollmer and Jessica Hardy won silver for the United States in 3:48.36, while Australia's Rachel Goh, Rebecca Soni, Felicity Galvez and Marieke Guehrer took bronze in 3:48.88
Also taking home some hardware was Swedish powerhouse, Therese Alshammar, who won the women's 50 butterfly in a new championship mark of 24.87. Australia's Felicity Galvez was a close second in 24.94.
Alshammar's win took her all-time tally of medals won at a short-course world championship to 16, one short of American Jenny Thompson.
Brazilian Cesar Cielo was the emotional victor of the men's 50 freestyle, claiming a championship record on the night in a time of 20.51, Frederick Bousquet was second in 20.81 while Josh Schneider was third in 20.88.
Japan's Naoya Tomita won the 200 breaststroke, ahead of Daniel Gyurta of Hungary.
