RYAN Lochte of the United States won the gold medal in the 400m individual medley on the opening day of the Olympic swimming meet yesterday.
Brazil's Thiago Pereira took silver while Japan's Kosuke Hagino finished third at the Olympic Park's Aquatics Centre.
US superstar Michael Phelps finished out of the medals in fourth place.
