Magnussen out as Cielo, Jones dead-heat in 50 free
BRAZIL'S world record holder Cesar Cielo and American Cullen Jones dead-heated for the fastest time while James Magnussen crashed out of the final of the men's 50m freestyle on Thursday.
Cielo and Jones hit the wall in 21.54secs in the semis to book their places in the final, scheduled for later yesterday.
"The most important thing wasn't to be first, it was the time," Cielo said.
"I was very happy to get that time, now I am just looking forward to getting some rest and getting ready for tomorrow."
Jones was delighted with his swim and said he was close to the American record in the event.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the race again on the video so I can see what I can change, what I can do different," Jones said. "It was a great swim for me, it was a best time without the suits so I am knocking on the door of the American record so I'm happy.
"It's going to be a tight race, this is definitely one of the fastest Olympics I've ever seen."
American Anthony Ervin was third ahead of second heat winner Bruno Fratus of Brazil.
But the agony continued for Australia's James 'The Missile' Magnussen, who missed out on the final with the 11th fastest time.
Magnussen was pipped by American Nathan Adrian by one-hundredth of a second in the 100m freestyle final on Wednesday. "The start was rusty, they got the jump on me and if you don't start well in the 50m, chances are you aren't going to pull it back," Magnussen said.
"We have a good chance in the medley relay.
"I have a day to recuperate and I am looking forward to that, I didn't put any expectations on myself."
