National team suspends Sun
Olympic swimming champion Sun Yang was suspended from competition and training by the national team yesterday, as well as banned from commercial activities after he was detained for driving without a license.
The 21-year-old sports star was involved in a minor collision with a bus in Hangzhou on Sunday. He was later found by traffic police to be driving without a license and handed a seven-day detention.
The General Administration of Sport’s swimming agency said Sun will be banned from both domestic and international competitions, as well as training with the national team. He was also prohibited from all social or commercial activities in which he is identified as a national swimming team member.
The agency did not say how long the suspension would last.
“Sun Yang ignored laws of the country and seriously violated team rules several times,” the swimming agency said. “He seriously damaged the image of the national swimming team and Chinese athletes.”
