Pedersen breaks world record in 200m breaststroke

Denmark’s Rikke Pedersen set a world record in the semifinals of the women’s 200m breaststroke on Thursday at the World Swimming Championships in Barcelona.

Pedersen blew away the field in a time of 2 minutes, 19.11 seconds. She broke the record of 2:19.59 set by American Rebecca Soni at last summer’s London Olympics.

Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands, Australia’s Cate Campbell and Swede Sarah Sjostrom finished with the three fastest times in the semis of the 100m freestyle.

Tyler Clary was quickest in the men’s 200m backstroke semis while Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta set the pace in the 200m breaststroke semifinals.
