Phelps tunes up for US Olympic trials at Texas Elite

OLYMPIC great Michael Phelps won the 100 meters butterfly and lost the 100 freestyle at the Austin Elite in Austin, Texas, on Friday in his final meeting before the United States Olympic swimming trials later this month.

Phelps, whose 14 Olympic gold medals include an unprecedented eight in one Games at Beijing four years ago, settled for second behind Jimmy Feigin in the 100 free, Phelps clocking 49.05 seconds to Feigin's 48.63.

Phelps said he used that setback to fuel his bid in the 100 butterfly, in which he powered to a comfortable victory in 52.02.

"I didn't swim smart or very well in the 100 (free), and I got beat because of it," the Maryland native said. "I was angry with myself for that, and I turned it around a little in the 100 butterfly."

The meeting, organized by the University of Texas aquatics department, is opposite the USA Swimming Grand Prix event of the season, in Santa Clara, California.

Phelps opted not to make the trip to California, instead using the Texas meeting as his last prep races for the Olympic trials in Omaha, Nebraska, starting on June 25.
