Russian men, Lochte sizzle

RUSSIA set the world record in the men's 800-meter freestyle relay at the short-course world championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on Thursday.

Nikita Lobintsev, Danila Izotov, Evgeny Lagunov and Alexander Sukhorukov clocked 6 minutes, 49.04 seconds, improving on Canada's mark from last year by more than two seconds.

Sukhorukov held off Richard Berens of the United States in the anchor leg. The Americans finished 0.54 seconds behind to take silver. France was third, a distant 4.01 seconds back.

The record was the third world mark of the meet after none were set all year in either the long- or short-course pool following a ban on high-tech bodysuits.

While China's women's squad set a world record in the 800 freestyle relay on Wednesday, Ryan Lochte's mark in the 400 individual medley on Thursday remains the only individual mark of 2010.

The American won the 400-meter IM in 3 minutes, 55.50 seconds, smashing the previous record set by Laszlo Cseh of Hungary a year ago by nearly two seconds.

"I wasn't really expecting that," Lochte said. "I was going out there to race the field. I had no idea where I was at during the race."

Olympic 1,500-meter champion Oussama Mellouli of Tunisia finished second, a distant 1.90 seconds behind, and Tyler Clary of the United States was third, 2.06 back.

Lochte trailed Clary at the race's midpoint, but was able to stay underwater longer than his teammate and took the lead on the butterfly leg. He was still 0.03 behind the world record mark at 300 meters and turned on the speed in freestyle to beat all his competitors by more than a bodylength and usher in a new era in swimming.

China won two silvers and a bronze on Thursday.

In the women's 100 backstroke, Zhao Jing and Gao Chang finished behind Natalie Coughlin, the American winning in 56.08 seconds. Zhao clocked 56.18 to Gao's 56.21.

Zhao (29.90) also took the bronze in the women's 50 breaststroke, which was won by American Rebecca Soni (29.83). Leiston Pickett of Australia was second in 29.84.
