Schipper snaps 100 butterfly record

JESSICAH Schipper set a shortcourse world record for the women's 100-meter butterfly at the Australian championships in Hobart, Tasmania, yesterday.
The 22-year-old Schipper was timed in 55.68 seconds, beating the mark of 55.74 set by fellow Australian Libby Trickett last year.
It was the fourth world record set at the national shortcourse championships, and Schipper said it came as a shock despite having extra motivation after narrowly missing a record in the 200 butterfly.
"I just wanted to do a PB (personal best) like last night and I'm just glad I could do a PB," she said. "I wasn't expecting to go so close (to the world record) in the 200 butterfly, but to get to the end and see I was so close to the world record and, considering I had a bit left in the tank, it really spurred me on for the 100."
Schipper won a gold medal and set a world record in the 200 butterfly at the recent Rome world championships.
"It's been a really big month that has taken its toll on me, but it's great to finish like that, now I can enjoy my holidays," she said.
"I have exceeded my expectations for Hobart, I did PBs in all of my swims so it's more than I expected and it's great to come here after Rome and do so well."
On Monday, Trickett broke her own shortcourse world record in the 100 freestyle, Christian Sprenger broke the mark in the 200 breaststroke and Emily Seebohm set a record in the 100 individual medley.
