Sun completes golden treble in Barcelona

China’s Sun Yang won a second consecutive world championship gold in the men’s 1,500 meters freestyle to complete a rare treble of distance titles yesterday.

The Olympic champion and world record holder clocked a time of 14 minutes 41.15 seconds at the hilltop pool in Barcelona, matching American teenager Katie Ledecky in winning 400, 800 and 1,500 freestyle titles in the Catalan capital.

The towering 22-year-old Sun is only the second man to achieve the feat at a world championships after Australian Grant Hackett at the 2005 edition in Montreal.

Ryan Cochrane of Canada repeated his second-place finishes at the last two world championships after touching in a time of 14:42.48, and Italian teenager Gregorio Paltrinieri was third in 14:45.37.

Russia’s Yuliya Efimova won the gold in the women’s 50 meters breaststroke yesterday.

Efimova, silver medalist at the last edition in Shanghai two years ago and champion in Rome in 2009, clocked a time of 29.52 seconds.

World record holder Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania took silver in 29.59 and American defending champion Jessica Hardy took bronze in 29.80.

Meilutyte, the 100m Olympic and world champion, broke the Russian’s record in Saturday’s sprint semifinals, just eight hours after Efimova had lowered the world record in the heats.

Camille Lacourt won the men’s 50 meters backstroke gold with French teammate Jeremy Stravius and the USA’s Matt Grevers tying for second place.

Lacourt, who shared the world 100m backstroke title with Stravius in 2011, touched the wall at 24.42sec, just ahead of Stravius and Grevers who were both 0.08 seconds back.

Holland’s Ranomi Kromowidjojo won the women’s 50m freestyle gold with Australia’s Cate Campbell second and Britain’s Fran Halsall third.

Kromowidjojo, the Olympic champion, clocked 24.05secs with Campbell, the world 100m champion, at 0.09 back and Britain’s Halsall at 0.25 adrift.

Japan’s Daiya Seto claimed gold in the men’s 400m individual medley with American Chase Kalisz in second and Brazil’s Thiago Pereira in third.

The 19-year-old powered home in the last 50m to clock a time of 4 minutes 08.69 seconds with Kalisz at 0.53 and Pereira at 0.79.

With double defending world champion Ryan Lochte opting not to take part in the event, the race seemed wide open before the start and so it proved.

Japan’s other teen sensation, Kosuke Hagino, who already has two silver medals to his name in Barcelona, looked set for a first gold with 100m remaining.

However, as Hagino floundered, Seto moved through the gears to take victory with Kalisz and Pereira also coming past Hagino to take their place on the podium.

Chinese teenager Ye Shiwen was third-quickest in heats for the 400 meters individual medley earlier yesterday as she looks to make up for the disappointment of missing out on a medal over 200 meters.

The 17-year-old, Olympic champion over both distances in London last year, could only manage fourth in Monday’s 200 final, Katinka Hosszu of Hungary taking the gold.

Ahead of the 400 final later yesterday, the last day of racing in Barcelona, Hosszu posted the fastest qualifying time of four minutes 32.72 seconds, with Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia second in 4:34.64 and Ye third in 4:34.93.
