Sun in fray as competition heats up for pool honors

A fierce competition awaits in the pool on September 21 at the Munhak Park Tae-hwan Aquatics Center when China’s golden boy Sun Yang takes on host South Korea’s Park Tae-hwan and Japan’s emerging talent Kosuke Hagino in the men’s 200m freestyle event.
Park and Sun have shared a healthy rivalry over the years. At the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, Park defended his title he won in 2006 Doha, while Sun finished behind him. Two years later at the London Olympics, both clocked 1:44.93 and shared the silver medal.
Hagino, an individual medley specialist, is the new kid on the block and heated up the competition in freestyle when he set a record at the Japanese Championships in April.
More recently, at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships, he was the fastest Asian when he came in second behind Australia winner Thomas Fraser-Holmes.
Sun, meanwhile, has thrown down the gauntlet to his rival Park. In a TV commercial, Sun says, “Mr Park, you broke the Asian record (400 freestyle) at the last Asian Games, but, so what? That record has been broken by me. Win it back if you can!”
