Sun storms to second Asian gold

Olympic star Sun Yang picked up his second gold medal of the Asian championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as the Chinese dominated for a second straight day on Friday.

Sun's victory in the 400-meter freestyle was one of nine golds won by China in the 10 races -- to go with eight out of 10 on the opening day. The only swimmer to break China's lock on the competition on Friday was Kazuki Kohinata of Japan in the men's 100 breaststroke.

Olympic bronze medalist Tang Yi also picked up her second gold, edging out compatriot Wang Haibing in the 50 free, while Olympic silver medalist Lu Ying took gold in the women's 50 butterfly. But Tang fell just short in a bid for a third gold, losing out to compatriot and two-time Olympic medalist Pang Jiaying in the women's 200 freestyle.

"I am very happy. I like it here," said Tang, who won two golds and a bronze at the 2010 world championships in Dubai. "I am happy with my times so far and I have enjoyed racing again."

China also set two more records for a total of five, as Zhang Fenglin won the men's 200 backstroke in a championship-time of 1:56.38, almost 2-1/2 seconds faster than the old record set in 2006. The men's 4x200 free relay team won gold in a championship-time of 7:21.32, .62 seconds faster than the 2009 record, also set by China.

Sun, who collected two golds, a silver and a bronze in London and broke his own 1,500 world record, won the 400 in a championship-record 3:42.49, 12 seconds faster than his closest rival Hao Yun of China. It was never close as Sun pulled away after the first 50 meters and finished almost a half-length ahead of Hao.

In a sign of just how overwhelming China was on Friday, it won 17 of 30 overall medals.

In Angers, France, Olympic gold medalist Camille Muffat set a new world record in the short-course women's 800 freestyle event at the French championships on Friday.

Muffat timed 8:01.06, smashing the previous mark of 8:04.53 set by Italian Alessia Filippi in Rijeka, Croatia, in December 2008, a time before the ban on high-tech polyurethane swimsuits.

At the London Games, the 23-year-old Muffat claimed gold in the 400 individual freestyle with a new Olympic record, as well as silver in the 200 freestyle and a bronze as part of the 4x200 freestyle team.

Her new world record follows that by her training partner Yannick Agnel in the men's 400 freestyle on Thursday.
