SUN Yang of China won the gold medal in the men's 400m freestyle on the opening day of the Olympic swimming meet yesterday.
South Korea's defending champion Park Tae-Hwan took silver while Peter Vanderkaay of the United States finished third at the Olympic Park's Aquatics Centre.
