Sun wins 200 free for 2nd gold

CHINESE superstar Sun Yang won the men’s 200-meter freestyle gold at the FINA world championships yesterday to add to his Olympic title in the same event.
Sun touched the wall first in 1 minute 44.39 seconds with Townley Haas of the United States taking silver, at 0.65 seconds back, while Russia’s Aleksandr Krasnykh earned bronze at 0.84.
This was Sun’s second gold of the Budapest championships after his victory in the 400 freestyle final on Sunday.
He will bid for the treble in today’s 800 freestyle final — the event he has dominated for the last three world championships since 2011 in Shanghai.
Sun timed his 200 race to perfection. He was fourth at the halfway point, but had caught leader and defending champion James Guy of Great Britain by the final turn and powered home to victory.
His win means the 25-year-old Sun is now the 200 freestyle champion at both the worlds and Olympics, after his victory at the Rio de Janeiro Games in Brazil last year.
The freestyle expert now has nine gold medals to his name spanning four world championships.
In the morning, Sun had a battle royal in his 800 preliminaries.
He was pushed all the way by Italy’s Gabriele Detti and just won the heat.
Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri was quickest at 7:45.31 with Sun 3.97 seconds back as the fifth fastest at the Duna Arena.
Australia’s Mack Horton, the Olympic 400 champion who lost Sunday’s final to Sun, dropped out of the 800 to focus on Saturday’s 1,500 freestyle heats.
Later yesterday, Katie Ledecky of the United States made history by becoming the first woman to win 12 world championships gold medals with victory in the women’s 1,500 freestyle final.
Ledecky, 20, clocked 15:31.82 with Spain’s Mireia Belmonte taking silver at a huge 19.07 seconds back, while Italy’s Simona Quadarella earned bronze at 22.04.
China’s Hou Yawen finished fifth in 16:08.10.
The Olympic and world champion had eased to victory earlier in her heat of the women’s 200 freestyle, clocking 1:56.27, two tenths of a second slower than world record holder Federica Pellegrini, who finished ahead of home favorite Katinka Hosszu in their heat.
“I knew where I wanted to be,” the American said. “The only thing I had to do this morning was get a lane for tonight. Just wanted to go out and win my heat. It didn’t really matter what the time was. I knew that would put me in a good position for tonight.”
