Sun wins third Asian gold as China stays in control

SUN Yang won a gold medal for a third straight day at the Asian swimming championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, when he took the 1,500-meter freestyle by more than 30 seconds or half a pool length on Saturday.

One of the best long-distance swimmers of his generation, the four-time Olympic medalist from China won the 1,500 in a championship-record 14 minutes 44.10 seconds, far short of his world record. He had won the 200 free and 400 free the previous two nights.

The lanky Sun played down his accomplishments, saying his gold haul was little more than practice for more serious events like the world championships next year.

"I feel satisfied with my performance in this competition," Sun said. "It's just the first step to getting back to my training. This competition is like training, intensity training."

Sun, however, said he wished he would have been pushed more in his three events. The competition, traditionally dominated by the Chinese, was unusually weak this year since Japan and South Korea did not send their top swimmers.

"If I had better competition, maybe I could have had better results," he said. "Maybe if there were more Korean swimmers then I could have had better times."

Sun was among eight Chinese to take gold in the day's nine finals, including Olympic silver medalist Lu Ying who won the women's 100 butterfly for her second gold.

Japan's Kazuki Kohinata won the 200 breaststroke in a championship-record 2:12.13 for his second gold, becoming only the fourth non-Chinese swimmer to win. The Chinese have won 25 of 29 races over the three days.

The Chinese set four championship-record times for a total of nine, including one by 13-year-old Xu Danlu, who won the 400 free in 4:05.75. Cheng Feiyi also collected his second gold of the competition, winning the 50 backstroke in a championship-record time of 25.25.
