China suspends Olympic champion Sun Yang over driving license violation

OLYMPIC swimming champion Sun Yang was suspended from competition and training by the national team today, and banned from commercial and social activities after his detention for driving without a license.

The 21-year-old sports star was involved in a minor collision with a bus in Hangzhou on Sunday. He was later found by traffic police to be driving without a license, and was handed a seven-day administrative detention.

The China Sports Bureau Swimming Management Center announced its punishment of Sun, who will be banned from taking part in all competitions held at home and abroad, as well as the national team training. He is also not allowed to attend any social or commercial activities using his identity as a national swimming team member.

The announcement did not mention when the suspension will be lifted.

Sun rocketed to fame after becoming the first Chinese man to win two gold medals for swimming at the 2012 London Olympics, becoming one of the country's most sought-after athletes.
