Swimming champion apologizes for breaking traffic law

Sun Yang, China's Olympic swimming champion, published an apology on his Weibo microblog yesterday, his 22nd birthday, for driving without a license last month and being detained for seven days because of that.

It was his second public apology after his breach of law. He wrote that he regrets what he did and is looking forward to "a new start" in his life.

Also yesterday he was elected the Best Male Swimmer of the World and the Pacific Rim by the US-published Swimming World Magazine.

The public has forgiven his misconduct and many netizens responded his microblog with wishes that he would become more mature and achieve better results in swimming.

Zhang Yadong, vice president of Zhejiang College of Sports, said Sun had returned for study and training.

Shang Xiutang, deputy director of the Management Center of Swimming under the State General Administration of Sports, said if Sun Yang performs well, he will return to the provincial and national teams very soon.
