Thompson resigns as Aussie coach
ALAN Thompson, who took personal leave as head coach of Australia's swim team in December after a claim of inappropriate behavior, has stepped down from that position.
Swimming Australia said in a statement yesterday that Thompson had accepted a redundancy from his position of general manager of high performance and head coach.
In December, SA chief executive Kevin Neil said an anonymous and unsubstantiated claim of inappropriate behavior had been brought to the national body's attention regarding Thompson, who had been head coach since January 2005.
While not giving details, Neil said the alleged behavior did not involve criminal activity. An independent commission was set up by Swimming Australia to investigate.
Leigh Nugent has been appointed as interim head coach.
Swimming Australia said its board, in consultation with the Australia Sports Commission, had decided to separate the positions of general manager for high performance and that of the head coach of Australian swim team. It said Thompson's decision to accept a redundancy was based on the fact that he was not prepared to work under that restructuring. "Swimming is a sport that prides itself on professionalism, hard work and success, and to continue to maintain and develop those values at all levels, we believe this new structure is the best way forward," Neil said.
