Wu, Shi off to golden worlds start

CHINA'S Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao won the first diving gold medal at the Barcelona world championships yesterday, earning Wu a record sixth world title in the women's 3-meter synchronized springboard.

The pair's almost flawless execution of all five dives framed by the dramatic backdrop of Barcelona's skyline gave them the top total score of 338.40 points.

To complete China's domination of the diving events on the first day, Li Shixin took the lead in the men's 1-meter springboard.

Italy's Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape claimed silver with 307.80 behind Wu and Shi, while Canada's Emilie Heymans and Jennifer Abel took bronze with 292.08.

Shanghai native Wu has won nine world or Olympic gold medals in the 3-meter synchronized springboard. The only major title to escape her was the 2005 world championship when she didn't compete in the event.

This is 27-year-old Wu's first major competition with Shi, who won gold in the 1-meter springboard at the 2011 worlds.

Meanwhile, Li, the defending 1-meter springboard world champion, led the men's qualification for tomorrow's final with 405 points, but a poor last dive let France's Matthieu Rosset finish only 0.5 points behind.

Li looked ready to end the preliminaries with a commanding points difference until he missed with a 3-1/2 somersault pike on the sixth and final dive and barely edged Rosset for the top spot. Illya Kvasha of Ukraine was third in qualifying.

Earlier, Tunisia's Oussama Mellouli became the first swimmer to win Olympic and world titles in both the pool and open water when he snatched a narrow victory in the 5-km event.

The 29-year-old North African powered around the two laps of the world championship harbor course at the end of the Rambla tourist drag in the heart of the Catalan capital in 53 minutes 30.4 seconds.

Canada's Eric Hedlin was just over a second behind with a time of 53:31.6 to take silver and Thomas Lurz of Germany was third with 53.32.2.

Mellouli won the 800 meters freestyle world title in Melbourne in 2007 but was stripped of his medal and banned for 18 months after testing positive for amphetamines.

He returned to take 1,500 meters freestyle gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and won the same event at the 2009 world championships in Rome.

In open water at last year's London Olympics, he won the marathon, beating Lurz into second with a late burst.

American Haley Anderson claimed the first gold of the world championships earlier when she pipped Brazil's Poliana Okimoto to the line to win the women's 5km event.
