Ye storms to 200m medley gold
CHINESE teenager Ye Shiwen added the world short course 200 meter individual medley title to her two Olympic golds on Saturday when she clinched victory in 2 minutes 4.64 seconds in Istanbul on Saturday.
Ye, 16, who took Olympic gold in the 200 and 400 medleys in London, finished ahead of Hungary's Katinka Hosszu and Hannah Miley of Great Britain.
"I'm so happy I came in first today. It feels so good," said Ye, after setting a new championship record.
"I competed against Hosszu many times in many events. This time she was stronger than ever. But I thought 'for sure I won't give up'. I had a chance to come back because in the breaststroke she is not so strong."
Elsewhere, Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania won her second gold, taking the 100 breaststroke - the same event she won gold in at the London Olympics.
The 15-year-old Meilutyte won in 1:3.52, beating the championship record of 1:03.98 set by American Rebecca Soni in Dubai, UAE, in 2010.
Alia Atkinson of Jamaica took the silver medal in 1:03.80. Rikke Pedersen of Denmark was third in 1:04.05.
Another championship record was set by Brazil's Nicholas Santos, who won the 50 butterfly in 22.22. Chad Le Clos of South Africa got the silver in 22.26 and American Thomas Shields was third in 22.46.
Robert Hurley of Australia won the 50 backstroke in 23.04, even though Stanislav Donets of Russia was a heavy favorite after clocking the fastest time in the semifinals. American Matt Grevers came second in 23.17 and Donets won bronze in 23.19.
In the day's last final, the United States won the women's 4x100 freestyle relay.
