Zhang flops, likely to miss out on London

ZHANG Lin failed to get rid of his bad form as he only managed seventh place in the final of the men's 200-meter freestyle at the national championships in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, yesterday.

Zhang, the Beijing Olympic runner-up in the 400m free, finished 10th in the heats earlier yesterday and failed to make the final. And his result was even worse in the final - 1:51.44.

His coach Chen Yinghong had said the Rome world champion was suffering from an asthma attack which was the main cause of his poor form.

His chances of competing in the London Games is now very slim.

Meanwhile, world champion Sun Yang claimed his third title at the national championships after winning the 200m free. Sun dominated the final with ease, and touched the line in 1:46.05. Hebei teenager Hao Yun took the silver in 1:47.08, while Li Yunqi from Henan was third in 1:48.17.

"I tried my utmost in every competition," said Sun, who also won the 400m and 800m free. "I am happy about the result, although it was not my best," added the 20-year-old. "I am quite stable. But I will need to improve in the 200m and 400m after the championships."

The Shanghai worlds 1,500m champion has qualified from three events but Sun said he did not expect to seek multiple titles at the London Games.

"I didn't think about it," he said. "One gold will be perfect."

World champion Jiao Liuyang won her first title in Shaoxing by topping the women's 200m fly. Jiao led the first lap, but was overtaken by her teammate Gong Jie after 100m, however, the butterfly specialist made a strong dash in the last 50m to win the title in 2:05.18.

Gong finished second in 2:05.38, while Olympic champion Liu Zige, representing Shanghai, settled for bronze in 2:07.37.

Training problems

"There are some problems in my training," said Liu. "I will focus on the 200m fly in the following months to prepare for the London Games."

In the women's 1,500m freestyle, Hunan teenager Li Xuanxu bettered her own national record by 0.01 second to lift the title in 16:09.55. Shanghai girl Zhou Lili finished second in 16:12.15, while Xin Xin of Shandong placed third in 16:13.57.

Fu Yuanhui of Zhejiang, winner of the women's 100m backstroke on Thursday, won the 50m backstroke in 27.95, beat Shandong's Gao Chang by 0.12 second.

Xu Tianlongzi of Chinese Army placed third in 28.45. "My performance was OK, but there are still some things I need to improve," said Fu. "I will take part in the 200m backstroke today."

Hunan lad Yang Zhixian claimed the men's 400m individual medley title in 4:11.92, only 0.31 second behind the 4:11.61 national record held by Wang Shun. Wang Chengxiang of Shandong and Huang Chaosheng of Hunan finished second and third respectively.

The men's 50m breaststroke gold went to Li Xiayan of Guangzhou Army, while the women's 4x100m medley relay title was claimed by team Guangzhou Army.
