Zhou not dropped yet from Shanghai worlds
CHINESE Olympic skater Zhou Yang has not yet been excluded from the squad for the Shanghai world short track speedskating championships in March even though she skipped the national Winter Games.
"Zhou is a great skater who has had some great results in previous world championships and Winter Olympic Games. She needs some time to get back into full fitness. We just have to be patient," said Zhao Yinggang, director of China's winter sports administrative center, on Wednesday. But another official said that the Changchun short track team had decided to rest Zhao in individual events. "She has not trained for almost six months," Zhao Xiaolu, deputy chef-de-mission of the Changchun delegation said. But there were rumors that the two-time Olympic gold medalist was voicing her dissatisfaction at the expulsion of her friend Wang Meng from the national team. Last August, Wang Meng, the most decorated winter sports athlete in the country, was expelled after a drunken brawl with national team manager Wang Chunlu. But Zhao Yinggang dismissed the notion, saying, "I don't think there is any sort of boycott."
