2 Chinese closer to securing GS spots
TWO Chinese youngsters edged closer to possible spots in the juniors of the French Open by winning the 2016 French Open Junior Wildcards Competition in Shanghai yesterday.
Bu Yunchaokete, a 14-year-old from Inner Mongolia, and Ni Ma Zhuo Ma, a 16-year-old from Tibet, won the boy’s and the girl’s titles at a four-day tournament held at the Shanghai Kangdong Tennis Center in Xuhui District.
The competition is also being held in India, Japan, Brazil and South Korea. Each leg winners will compete in the final phase in Paris in May to gain entry into the junior draw of the French Open at Roland Garros.
“I’m very excited about becoming a champion,” said Bu.
“It could be my first experience to play in the juniors of a grand slam. I’ll do my best against the other foreign players in Paris.”
In its third year, the wildcard competition is part of a cooperation between the French Federation of Tennis and the Chinese Tennis Association to promote tennis here.
The organizers brought the two French Open trophies — the Mousquetaires Cup and Suzanne Lenglen Cup — for display in Shanghai during the tournament.
