3rd Rome title for Sharapova

MARIA Sharapova rallied to beat 10th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 yesterday and win her third Italian Open title.

The victory gives Sharapova confidence on clay as she prepares to defend her title at the French Open, which starts next Sunday.

The Russian will climb to No. 2 in the world rankings next week, behind American Serena Williams, and will be seeded second at Roland Garros.

With the temperature soaring above 30 degrees Celsius at the Foro Italico in Rome, Sharapova struggled for long stretches to figure out Suarez Navarro’s spins, slices and heavy topspin shots.

But once Sharapova started stepping into the court, attacking the Spaniard’s serve and finding the corners, she took control.

Sharapova’s first two titles in Rome came back-to-back in 2011 and 2012. Suarez, meanwhile, was bidding for only the second title of her career.

Meanwhile, Chinese filmmaker Peter Chan Ho-sun is making a movie about compatriot tennis star Li Na.

Chan’s production company We Pictures said in a statement on Saturday that the film will be based on Li’s autobiography “Li Na: My Life” and will be released in 2016. Li became the first Asian player to win a grand slam when she captured the French Open in 2011.

Chan said: “Li Na had an impossible dream and found a way to turn it into reality. She broke rules and defied conventions and, against all odds, became a legend.”
