5th 'dead rubber' in Davis Cup can be dropped
DAVIS Cup teams will no longer have to play a fifth match if one side already has an unbeatable 3-1 lead.
The International Tennis Federation announced the new "dead rubber" rule yesterday ahead of this weekend's World Group first-round matches.
Under the change, if one team clinches victory in the best-of-five series after the fourth match on Sunday - the first reverse singles - and that match lasted at least four sets, the captains can agree to scrap the second reverse singles.
However, all five matches still have to be played if a team earns an unbeatable 3-0 lead after Saturday's doubles, or the tie is decided after the fourth match which has gone only three sets.
All "dead rubbers" will continue to be played over best-of-three tiebreaker sets.
Meanwhile, Sam Querrey will miss the United States' first-round Davis Cup clash with Chile because of a right rotator cuff injury.
US captain Jim Courier said in New York that the right-handed Querrey had an MRI last week on his shoulder and was told by doctors to rest. Querrey is No. 24 in the ATP rankings.
No. 8 Andy Roddick, No. 32 John Isner and the top-ranked doubles team of twins Bob and Mike Bryan will represent the US against Chile on an outdoor clay court at Santiago from Friday through Sunday.
Flu-like symptoms
Roddick saw doctors last week after flu-like symptoms kept him out of an ATP event in Delray Beach, Florida.
College senior Michael Shabaz and 2009 Wimbledon boys runner-up Jordon Cox will join the US squad in Chile as practice partners, Courier said.
In Kuala Lumpur, rising Serbian teen Bojana Jovanovski overcame Urszula Radwanska of Poland 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 to reach the Malaysian Open quarterfinals yesterday.
The eighth-seeded Jovanovski also came from a set down to beat Radwanska in the same round in Doha, Qatar, last week.
Jovanovski broke into the top 100 last July and by year's end was the youngest person in the top 100. Since turning 19 on New Year's Eve, she has reached her first WTA semifinals in Sydney in January.
In Monterrey, Mexico, fourth seed Julia Goerges of Germany was ousted in the first round of Monterrey Open on Tuesday after a 1-6, 5-7 loss to Ksenia Pervak of Russia.
Other seeded players had better results in the hardcourt tournament.
Second-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia had a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4 win over Eleni Daniilidou of Greece in a night match.
No. 5 Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia defeated Laura Pous-Tio of Spain 6-2, 6-4, and No. 6 Sara Errani of Italy had a 6-2, 6-4 win over Johanna Larsson of Sweden.
