Aussies take winning lead against China
LLEYTON Hewitt and Chris Guccione gave Australia a winning 3-0 lead in its Davis Cup Asia-Oceania qualifier against China, beating Zhang Ze and Li Zhe 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in yesterday's doubles in Geelong.
The match started an hour late due to rain on the grasscourts of the Geelong Lawn Tennis Club.
On Friday in singles, Hewitt beat Chinese No. 1 Zhang 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (4) and Bernard Tomic put Australia up 2-0 by beating Wu Di 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Australia will host the winner of the South Korea-Chinese Taipei series in the next round. South Korea leads 2-0.
The winner will then progress to a losing first-round World Group country in an attempt to return to the elite eight-team competition for 2013.
In Hyogo, Japan, Ivo Karlovic and Ivan Dodig overpowered Tatsuma Ito and Yuichi Sugita 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in doubles yesterday as Croatia took a 2-1 lead over Japan in their first-round World Group series.
As in Friday's singles win over Kei Nishikori, Karlovic made the most of his powerful serve, combining with Dodig for 24 aces in a match that lasted 2 hours, 50 minutes.
Japan is returning to the World Group for the first time in 26 years after beating India 4-1 in a regional playoff in September. Croatia is seventh in the Davis Cup rankings, 10 places ahead of Japan.
On Friday, Roger Federer's first opening-round Davis Cup match in eight years ended in a shock defeat as the 16-time grand slam champion slumped 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (4), 2-6 against John Isner allowing the United States to take a 2-0 lead against Switzerland.
Switzerland hasn't won in the World Group since Federer decided to skip the first round from 2005, and the Alpine nation will struggle to change that statistic this year after Mardy Fish beat Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 9-7 in a thrilling opening match.
In other first-round series in the top tier, it was: Serbia 2, Sweden 0; Austria 2, Russia 0; Argentina 2, Germany 0; Spain 2, Kazakhstan 0; Czech Republic 2, Italy 0; and Canada 1, France 1.
