Australia wants talks with Tomic
Australian tennis officials want to clear the air with Bernard Tomic and reinstate the country鈥檚 estranged No. 1 into the Davis Cup team for the semifinal against Britain.
The world No. 29 was booted off the team before the quarterfinal win over Kazakhstan on Sunday for publicly criticizing Tennis Australia officials in an extraordinary tirade at Wimbledon.
Tomic was arrested in Miami last week after holding a noisy party at a penthouse suite in his hotel and the 22-year-old later said he was still 鈥渋n a fight鈥 with TA and had no plans of making peace.
However, TA president Steve Healy said the governing body hoped to contact him soon to hammer out their issues. 鈥淲e want to offer Bernard the opportunity to raise the issues he has raised, so we can address those with him,鈥 Healy told local media in Canberra yesterday. 鈥淲e think (Tomic鈥檚) criticisms are unjustified 鈥 he needs to hear that. He needs to get some detail, and we want to bring him back into the fold.鈥
Australia rallied to win its quarterfinal 3-2, setting up a last-four encounter away to Britain on September 18-20 as the 28-time winner seeks to lift the trophy for the first time since 2003.
TA鈥檚 high performance chief Pat Rafter announced last month that funding would be cut to Tomic and his sister Sara, who plays second-tier events on the ITF circuit, in part because of their father鈥檚 uncooperative attitude.
Tomic responded by accusing TA of neglecting he and his sister鈥檚 development during his Wimbledon rant.
