Azarenka, Kirilenko to meet in final
SECOND seed Victoria Azarenka advanced to the final of the Kremlin Cup after beating eighth-seeded Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain 6-3, 6-3 in Moscow yesterday.
In her fourth final this season, the 10th-ranked Belarusian will face Russian sixth-seed Maria Kirilenko, who crushed compatriot Vera Dushevina 6-1, 6-1.
Azarenka saved two break points in the opening game and did not face another one in the rest of the match. She broke the 28th-ranked Sanchez in the sixth game of the first set and in the first and eighth games of the second.
Serving at 3-5 down in the second set, Sanchez, a doubles specialist, saved two match points before returning wide.
"Sanchez is such a player that you never know what to expect from her," Azarenka, who lost to the Spaniard twice earlier this season, said after the match. "I've chosen the right tactics against her today and didn't allow her to change the rhythm or advance to the net to attack as she likes doing. I've fought for every ball and that was the key to my victory."
Azarenka is chasing her fifth career title and second this season after winning in Stanford in July.
By reaching the quarterfinals, Azarenka secured a spot in the season-ending WTA Tour championships in Doha, Qatar, this week, where she will replace the injured Serena Williams.
In Stockholm, world No. 2 Roger Federer survived a scare to beat fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Friday to reach the semifinals of the Stockholm Open.
Federer had his serve broken by the fifth seed in the first game and seemed out of sorts until the fourth game of the second set when a smashed winner signalled the start of his comeback.
Earlier, second-seeded Swede Robin Soderling was beaten 6-7 (8), 1-6 by Germany's Florian Mayer.
Mayer next faces Jarkko Nieminen after the Finn put out American James Blake 6-0, 6-2. Federer takes on fourth seed Ivan Ljubicic after the Croat defeated countryman Ivan Dodig 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
