Azarenka wraps up a ‘double bagel’ victory

For all of one game, Victoria Azarenka faced a bit of a test in the first round of the US Open on Tuesday in New York.

And after needing 10 minutes to break serve at the outset, the second-seeded Azarenka breezed the rest of the way, putting together a 6-0, 6-0 victory over 99th-ranked Dinah Pfizenmaier of Germany.

“There are things, you know, I feel like should be better,” Azarenka said. “But overall, it’s a good start.”

It’s the third time in Azarenka’s career that she managed to win a Grand Slam match 6-0, 6-0.

This one was played in Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Azarenka lost to Serena Williams in last year’s final.

Up next for Azarenka is 323rd-ranked Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada, a 7-5, 7-6 (5) winner against Vesna Dolonc of Serbia.

Caroline Wozniacki, Petra Kvitova and Ana Ivanovic also advanced.

Also, fourth-seeded Sara Errani posted a “double bagel,” beating Olivia Rogowska 6-0, 6-0.

No. 10-seeded Roberta Vinci beat Timea Babos 6-4, 6-2 while Christina McHale beat 45th-ranked Julia Goerges 6-4, 6-3.
