Barty stuns Pliskova to make Wuhan last 4

Australia’s Ashleigh Barty pulled off a major upset against former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinals of the Wuhan Open yesterday, downing the No. 3 seed 4-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2).

Barty, ranked 37th in the world, failed to convert three match points in the third set but dominated the deciding tiebreak to bag her first ever win against a top-five player.

The 21-year-old Barty had already seen off Agnieszka Radwanska, seeded nine, and Johanna Konta, the fifth seed, in a dream run in the humid central Chinese city in Hunan Province.

“I played a really good match and I’m just happy to come through at the end,” she said.

“It was really important for me to look after my service games and obviously try and make inroads into Karolina’s games and I was able to do that.”

After Pliskova’s exit, there are now just two seeds remaining in the competition.

The Czech, who is the world No. 4, but who spent eight weeks at No. 1 this year, had looked strong in the earlier rounds as she breezed past Zhang Shuai and Wang Qiang, who became the first Chinese to reach the third round in Wuhan.

Barty will face either world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza, the Wimbledon champion from Spain, or Latvian French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko, seeded eight, in the semifinals.

The other semifinal will be between two unseeded players, with Maria Sakkari of Greece taking on France’s Caroline Garcia.

Sakkari beat Garcia’s compatriot Alize Cornet 7-6 (2), 7-5 while Garcia got the better of Russian Ekaterina Makarova 7-6 (3), 6-4 last night.

Radwanska cited exhaustion after a long season for the seeds suffering early exits in Wuhan.

The Pole was speaking on Wednesday after she joined the exodus of tournament favorites, including Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, Simona Halep of Romania, Briton Konta, and the US Open finalists, Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys, both of the United States.
