Berdych beats Ukrainian to reach Dubai quarters

Third-seeded Tomas Berdych had an easy time securing a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine at the Dubai Championships yesterday.

Berdych, who will face fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals, has won his last eight matches.

Despite Berdych having trouble with his first serve — his percentage was a ghastly 37 percent — he controlled the match. The Czech lost his serve once, and won 12 of the last 14 points.

“I was working a little more on my return stats than on my service stats,” Berdych said. “The main focus really for the next days is to get my percentage of the first serve back and really find a nice and sweet rhythm for my serve.”

Tsonga won his second-round match by walkover when his opponent, Nikolay Davydenko, withdrew with a rib injury.

Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic upset eighth-seeded Dmitry Tursunov of Russia 6-4, 7-6 (4), and seventh-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Andrea Seppi of Italy.

Kohlschreiber will play Tunisian wildcard Malek Jaziri, who bypassed Somdev Devvarman of India 6-3, 7-5.

Roger Federer was playing Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic later, followed by defending champion Novak Djokovic taking on Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.

Major casualty

In Acapulco, David Ferrer and Andy Murray, the top two seeds at the Mexican Open, advanced to the second round on Tuesday while American third seed John Isner became the first major casualty of the tournament, losing 6-7 (4), 6-7 (5) to Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic.

Ferrer had a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin while Murray overcame a sluggish start and claimed a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Pablo Andujar of Spain.

“I had a difficult start, it was 10 minutes in the match and I was down 0-5, but I started to play more aggressively to get the win and hopefully I can have a good week here”, Murray said. “The first set was extremely challenging, he was dictating the points, but later on he was getting tired and I put the pressure on him”.

Murray, who played for the first time ever in Latin America, lost his first three service games but came back strongly to set up a match against Joao Sousa of Portugal, who rallied to defeat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

On the women’s side, top-seeded Dominika Cibulkova had a 6-3, 6-4 win over Urszula Radwanska of Poland and Eugenie Bouchard eliminated Israel’s Shahar Peer 6-2, 6-2.
