Berdych reaches Halle last 8

WIMBLEDON finalist Tomas Berdych beat Jan Hernych 6-3, 7-6 (7) to reach the quarterfinals of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, yesterday.

The seventh-ranked Berdych broke twice in the first set and closed out the second-round match against his fellow Czech on his fourth match point at the grasscourt tournament.

On Tuesday, Berdych saved three match points before beating Belgian qualifier Ruben Bemelmans.

"(Losing on match point) is maybe the one thing that I'm not happy with today. But it was, I would say, a much more solid game than yesterday," said Berdych, the 2007 champion. "Missing two serves on match points, you just have to think about it after the match. But I got back into it and was mentally strong."

Berdych will play the 12th-ranked Viktor Troicki, who dismissed Igor Andreev of Russia 6-3, 6-1. The Serb needed just 53 minutes to win, breaking five times and losing just five points on his first serve.

"It will be a really tough game," Berdych said. "Only the ranking position could make me the favorite. He is really playing well the last couple of weeks."

Also yesterday, defending champion Lleyton Hewitt won his first-round match against Argentina's Leonardo Mayer 6-2, 6-3.

Hewitt is playing in his first event since Indian Wells in March after struggling with foot and ankle injuries. The Australian said, "I didn't have a lot of high expectations going out there. But things got better as the match went on."

Mayer was the lucky loser replacement for Roger Federer, who withdrew on Monday.

Canada's Milos Raonic, the eighth seed, beat German Tobias Kamke 7-6 (2), 6-3 to reach the last eight.

In London, Andy Roddick began his bid for a record fifth title at Queen's Club on Tuesday by defeating 2010 semifinalist Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (2), 6-7 (5), 6-4.

The third seed survived a barrage of 35 aces and claimed victory on his third match point after battling for two hours and 13 minutes.

"I love it on grass and am so happy to be back on it," said the American, who missed the French Open with a shoulder injury. "I feel good."

Defending champion Sam Querrey also advanced into the third round with a 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-3 win over Germany's Rainer Schuettler, although the American failed to make the most of his many break points.

Querrey next plays British wildcard James Ward, who upset fourth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 7-6 (3), 6-3.

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal was facing Matthew Ebden yesterday in his opening match after the Australian qualifier defeated India's Somdev Devvarman 7-5, 6-3.

Second-seeded Andy Murray faces 2002 Wimbledon semifinalist Xavier Malisse, who defeated Matthias Bachinger 6-4, 6-4.
