Chang says Nishikori tired and needs rest
MICHAEL Chang said Kei Nishikori needed some rest after a packed Asian swing.
Nishikori lost in the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters. “It was disappointing. I expected him to play a few rounds more in Shanghai,” Chang, who coaches Nishikori, told Shanghai Daily yesterday. “However, Kei played a lot of matches since the US Open. He is tired and needs some rest. This is professional tennis, and you can’t do much about it.”
Nishikori won the Malaysian and Japan Open after becoming the first Asian to reach the US Open final.
“He has been playing a bit tight due to an injury. He has 10 days to rest and adjust, and hopefully will be fit before arriving in Spain.”
The Chinese-American said the physique of the Asian male players was not a disadvantage when compared to their western counterparts.
“The bigger the better is not the rule in tennis, otherwise I would not choose professional tennis,” the former French Open winner said. “What we can improve is movement, speed, quickness and flexibility. I don’t see the training method for an Asian player as different compared to the western players.”
Chang won the inaugural Heineken Open in 1998 in Shanghai. The 42-year-old has been impressed by the growth of tennis in the city. “When I played here, (the Heineken Open) was a much smaller event. How I wish the big tournaments now staged in Shanghai were already there when I was a player. I’m excited to see that Shanghai fans are getting more involved in the sport.”
