China Celebrates Historic Victory
CHINA celebrated Li Na's Australian Open semifinal win yesterday as a historic victory for a sport often ignored in a country where table tennis and badminton reign supreme.
Sports anchor Tong Kexin on state broadcaster CCTV, which broadcast the match live, bubbled over with enthusiasm when Li won, saying the country can now claim to have a topflight player.
"Li Na has made history, has made history for the Chinese tennis players," Tong screamed out. "Such an exciting match, but it really was like a dream. This broadcast has been like riding a roller coaster."
Commentator Xu Chang said Li had raised the profile of Chinese tennis, which has long struggled for recognition next to badminton and table tennis, in which Chinese athletes have long been dominant.
"Li has realized the dreams of all those promoting Chinese tennis," Xu said.
Xinhua News Agency said a Grand Slam win by Li "would also inspire a rush of new tennis players in China."
Li's climb up the tennis ranks came after she took the rare step of breaking away from the state-run sports system in 2008 and hiring her own coach.
