China advances in Davis Cup
China’s Wu Di came back from two sets down to give his country an unassailable 3-1 lead in the Davis Cup tie against New Zealand yesterday.
In the northern port city of Tianjin, world No. 291 Rubin Statham took the first two sets for the visitors, both on tie breaks, but Wu, ranked almost 100 places higher at 198, fought all the way back to take it 6-4 in the decider. The win put China 3-1 up in the tie, and the match between China’s Zhang Ze and New Zealand’s Michael Venus was abandoned, the Davis Cup website said.
