China grabs 2-0 Davis Cup lead
CHINA yesterday secured a 2-0 lead in a Davis Cup tie against Pakistan, winning both matches on day one at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts.
China’s Zhang Ze beat Aqil Khan convincingly 6-4, 6-2 and 6-2 in the opening match of the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group I tie in Sri Lankan capital Colombo, to gain an early lead.
The match was played in Sri Lanka, instead of Pakistan, due to security concerns.
Khan fought hard, winning the third and fourth games in the first set, but Zhang went on to win the last two sets of the match that lasted for an hour and 52 minutes.
In the second match, Aqil’s younger brother Yasir put in an even braver effort against China’s Wu Di, but could not snatch victory for Pakistan despite winning the first set 6-3.
Wu came back strongly in the second set and levelled the score with a 6-1 win before taking the third at 6-4.
In Melbourne, New Australian Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt spent his first day on the side of the court watching his team finish level with the United States after the opening singles in a World Group first-round match. Whether he crosses the line and comes out of retirement to play for the home side over the next two days remains to be seen.
Bernard Tomic defeated American Jack Sock 7-6 (2), 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 yesterday after John Isner gave the US the lead with a 7-6 (2), 6-2, 6-2 win over Sam Groth on grass at Kooyong.
Tomic broke Sock’s serve in the ninth game of the fourth set, then clinched the match in the next game through four consecutive points. The match ended when Sock’s backhand went long on a service return.
“Bernie stepped up when we needed him to,” Hewitt said. “We knew the Americans were going to be tough.”
Groth and John Peers are scheduled to play doubles against Bob and Mike Bryan today.
